Amritsar in One Day: Golden Temple, Food and Shopping Notes

This post now works as a simple one-day Amritsar food travel note. The main places covered are the Golden Temple, Giani Tea Stall, Pahalwan Kulche Wala, Kesar Da Dhaba, Jalebiyaan Wala in Katra Ahluwalia and a little old-city shopping.

Quick one-day route

  • Start: Golden Temple / Harmandir Sahib
  • Tea and snacks: Giani Tea Stall
  • Breakfast / lunch option: Pahalwan Kulche Wala for chole with tandoori kulche
  • Sweet stop: Jalebiyaan Wala, Katra Ahluwalia
  • Main meal: Kesar Da Dhaba for vegetarian thali and palak paneer
  • Shopping: old city lanes for local food shopping and small take-home items

Most of these places are around the inner city. For Kesar Da Dhaba, Pahalwan and Jalebiyaan Wala, it is easier to go by rickshaw and then walk through the lanes.

Golden Temple

We started with the Golden Temple. You enter the complex after covering your head and depositing shoes. The visit is calm even when there are many people around.

At the exit, you receive prasad made with wheat flour, ghee and sugar. Langar is also an important part of the Golden Temple visit, and the detailed langar notes are in a separate post.

Giani Tea Stall

At Giani Tea Stall, we had tea, samosa and paneer pakora. I liked the freshness of the paneer and the tea. The seating could be better, especially when it is busy.

Pahalwan Kulche Wala

At Pahalwan Kulche Wala, we had chole with tandoori kulche. I liked the simple flavours and the crispness of the kulcha. Seating can be limited during the morning rush.

Kesar Da Dhaba

Kesar Da Dhaba was the main vegetarian meal stop. We had a vegetarian thali with palak paneer. From this visit, Kesar worked well as a sit-down meal after walking through the old city lanes.

Jalebiyaan Wala, Katra Ahluwalia

At Jalebiyaan Wala in Katra Ahluwalia, we had jalebi and gulab jamun. I liked the crunchy jalebi. The shop could use clearer directions or signage because it is not always obvious to find.

Shopping note

We also kept some time for old-city shopping. Around Amritsar, food shopping can include papad, wadiyan, pickles, spices and sweets. It is better to keep this flexible because the lanes are busy and many places are easier to cover on foot.

Vegetarian, vegan and kid notes

The places in this one-day food route were pure vegetarian during our visit. Vegan options are not confirmed because tea, paneer, ghee, sweets and thali items may include dairy. For kids, the main note is spice level — some snacks and chole can be spicy.
